PRODUCING NATURAL GAS FROM COW MANURE

Recently, the California Public Utilities Commission has approved the daily purchase of up to 8,000 cubic feet of quality renewable natural gas. The gas will be generated from cow manure and extracted by Microgy; a company specialized in anaerobic digestion technology. This technology has been shown to generate significantly more bio-gas than other digestion methods, and has been well proven for almost two decades in Europe.

Producing natural gas from cow manure or any other manure is not new. With fossil energy supply in the United States in a state of disarray, the need to find renewable, long-term and cost-effective energy sources has received new urgency. The US depends more on natural gas for its energy needs than any other industrialized nation. It consumes some 25 percent of the world’s yearly output of natural gas, and produces nearly 85 percent of the natural gas it consumes.

The use of electricity entails special hazards from electrocution to electrical burns. Electrocutions may have decreased in recent years, but the number of death in the USA is still very high. Electrical shock or electrocution results when the body reacts to an electrical current – this reaction can include an intense contraction of muscles and an extremely high heat at the point of contact between your skin and the electrical current. The heat leads to burns that can cause death or disfigurement.

The hazards of electricity depend on the amount of electrical current, its frequency, its duration, its path through the body, and the physical condition of the person. It is common knowledge that wall-outlet voltages of 120V in the USA and 230V in Europe can cause severe shock or death. Alternating current at 60 Hz is slightly more dangerous than direct current, but high frequency currents (greater than a few kHz) are safer because they tend to flow on the surface of the skin and away from the heart and lungs. Water is one of the basic needs of all living beings on this planet. It is also one of the most important constituents of the human body. The human brain is 90% water while the human blood is made up of 83% water. Unfortunately, more than 40% of the population of the USA may be needlessly exposed to unhealthy drinking water. Two thirds of the water on earth is groundwater. As it travels through rock and soil it picks up particles of calcium, magnesium, iron, lead, and other minerals. That translates into “hard water”. The “hardness” refers to the amount of calcium and magnesium in the water, and it is measure in parts per million. If the calcium content of the water is 160 ppm or less, it is referred to as soft water.
